What can we learn on the road?

This week at God’s Big Campout, Holy Cross VBS 2014, 70 kids and 30 adults embarked on a journey together to learn more about the way God walks with us when we’re  on the road.

  • Through the story of creation, we learned that God made everything we see along the road and IT WAS GOOD!
  •  Sarah and Abraham’s story illustrated God’s promises to always love us, care for us, and forgive us – no matter what. That means we don’t have to be afraid of what might be ahead of us on the road.
  • With the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, we discover that God is always with us, walking beside us on the path of faith.
  • A stormy sea journey helped the disciples learn that Jesus always helps us when we’re afraid.

We tend to think of Vacation Bible School or Sunday school only as learning opportunities for the young people in the classrooms (or in this case in a tent or outside in the grass).  But in truth, the adults involved benefit as much as the children. We’re thankful for and humbled by the grandmas and grandpas, middle schoolers and high schoolers, moms and dads who give their time, create engaging lessons, and demonstrate so much love and caring. We’re energized by the looks of amazement on little faces when they see a chemical reaction. Our hearts are warmed when we see children sharing with friends or welcoming a new face to the group. I always come away from VBS having learned from our youngest friends how to be open to the surprises God has in store for us along the road.

Throughout this week of God’s Big Campout I’ve witnessed an abundant outpouring of love; from God to all involved, from our leaders to the many children, from the children to their classmates and their leaders.  This experience is a blessing to the entire congregation. I continually give thanks for the opportunity to be a part of it.
